Rotor or Alugear on a Shimano crankset?

Rotor remains the broadest option when you want Q-Rings, unusual gearing or multiple chainring styles. Alugear is particularly attractive for modern kits, aero integration and selected gearing combinations on current Shimano cranksets.

"Shimano 12-speed" is not enough to confirm compatibility. Always check the exact crank model and whether a factory power meter is fitted.

Why keep the Shimano crank arms?

If crank length, bottom bracket and any existing power meter already suit the rider, replacing only the chainrings is often more rational and less expensive than changing the complete crankset.

FAQ – Rotor Chainrings for Shimano 12-Speed Cranksets

Can I use non-Shimano chainrings on my Shimano crankset?

Yes, with the Rotor 12-11v chainring range, you can upgrade your Shimano crankset and access a wider selection of chainrings, ranging from 46 to 58 teeth for large chainrings and 34 to 44 teeth for small chainrings.

What are the recommended chainring combinations?

For beginners and less-trained cyclists, 50/34 is a great option, especially for mountainous terrain. 52/36 offers a balance between pedaling smoothness and speed. 53/39 is becoming more popular among a wider audience due to 12-speed cassettes maintaining cadence. High-level cyclists prefer 54/39 or 54/42, with professionals sometimes using 55/42. For time trials and triathlon, 56/44 and 58/44 are ideal. Single chainring options range from 40 to 54 teeth, allowing you to convert your Shimano crankset to a 1x setup affordably.

Can I use these Rotor chainrings on my Shimano 11-speed crankset?

Yes, these chainrings are retro-compatible with Shimano 11-speed cranksets.

Is installation easy?

Yes, installation is straightforward. You only need a torque wrench set to 7-8Nm to tighten the chainring bolts. In some cases, you may need to use the provided spacer on the Shimano crankset axle to maintain the same chainline as the original chainrings.

What do Rotor Qrings add to my Shimano crankset?

Rotor Qrings reduce the dead spot in your pedal stroke. For example, a 53T oval chainring behaves like a 50T chainring at the dead spot, making it easier to pass through this point.

Are Rotor Qrings adjustable?

No, Qrings are not adjustable when installed on a Shimano 12-speed crankset. However, they are adjustable if mounted on a Rotor 4-arm spider. For more flexibility in adjustments, it's better to use Rotor chainrings with a Rotor crankset.

Can I convert my Shimano crankset to a 1x setup?

Yes, Rotor offers single chainrings ranging from 40 to 54 teeth, enabling an easy and affordable conversion of your Shimano crankset to a 1x setup, perfect for gravel, cyclocross, and triathlon.
